It’s hard to beat walking up to any river in the world with a fly rod and flies you tied yourself.  Especially when you walk up to the world famous Hollywood Hole in Missoula, MT.  I love the feeling of anticipation.

 

 

Hollywood Hole is a staple for the Missoula locals.  I met a young couple fishing that love the evening bite.  

I fished a dry dropper combination at the beginning of my session, but switched to a streamer I tied up when the lights got a little low.

 

 

Stripping a small olive streamer is a blast.  You can work just about every portion of the water and trigger that strike.  Small and olive is probably my go to pattern when you are looking for that one hungry fish. This one nailed my streamer right at the end of the bend, when it began the swing in the current.  He fought like a champ in the fast water, but I managed to get him in on my barbless streamer.

 

 

Every one has this opportunity when traveling to mountain states.  I spoke with a handful of business travelers staying at my hotel that watched me walk through the lobby, fly rod in hand.  They all said they would bring a fly rod if it was easy to travel with, and I showed them El Jefe.  22 inch case, fits in your carry on.  Think about brining a fly rod on all your trips and getting a little relaxation in the morning or at the end of the day.  I guarantee this simple addition to your travel will bring an incredible return in slowing down your mind, and getting away from the world.  Even if you aren’t traveling to mountain states with easy access to trout water, you can find bass and bluegills pretty much anywhere in the country.  A little planning goes a long way.
