"Best Travel Rod I've Ever Owned"

I took this rod to Patagonia and it handled everything from 20-inch browns to heavy wind. You'd never know it was 6 pieces. The action is incredibly smooth and it packs down smaller than my camera tripod.

"Perfect for Backcountry Fishing"

As someone who hikes into remote alpine lakes, the compact size is a game-changer. It straps to my backpack and I barely notice it's there. Performance-wise, it casts beautifully and has plenty of backbone for bigger fish.

"No More Checked Bag Fees!"

I travel internationally for fishing at least 4 times a year. This rod has saved me hundreds in baggage fees and the peace of mind knowing my rod is always with me is priceless. Casts just as well as my traditional 4-piece.

"Incredible Rods"

Just back from a trip to Argentina where I used multiple 5–7 wt rods and reels from Pescador on the Fly in extremely windy conditions. As a former guide, I know what works—and these delivered. Traveling with them was easy (all safely in my carry-on) while others on the trip dealt with lost rods in checked luggage. Performance was excellent, holding up right alongside my $1,000+ rods. Well made, smooth reels, and outstanding service. Highly recommend.

"Quality Gear that truly performs when it matters"

I fished Pescador on the Fly’s 6-piece travel rods and reels in New Zealand, targeting big, powerful trout, andthe setup was outstanding.Easy to travel with, excellent casting performance, smooth and reliable drag, and a rod action that provided both control and protection during long, hard runs. I didn’t lose a single fish once hooked. Even the seasoned local guides were impressed and asked about the rod and reel. Quality gear that truly performs when it matters.

MOST ASKED FLY ROD QUESTIONS

What’s the difference between the El Rey, El Jefe, and Econ 101 Fly Rod Series?

Each rod family is built for a different level of performance, materials, and refinement — but all are designed with the same direct-to-angler philosophy and attention to detail.

El Rey is our premium series. Built with high-modulus carbon fiber and top-tier components, it delivers the lightest weight, fastest recovery, and highest overall performance — especially in our super-compact travel designs. This is for anglers who want one rod that can go anywhere without compromise.

El Jefe is our refined performance series. It offers exceptional feel, versatility, and durability with premium components, making it ideal for anglers who want high-level performance for both home waters and destination trips.

Econ 101 is our value-forward series. Designed to be a clear step above traditional starter gear, it delivers dependable performance and thoughtful design at an approachable price point — perfect for newer anglers or anyone adding another setup to their lineup.

No matter which you choose, you’re getting performance-driven design without retail markup — just different levels of materials, refinement, and specialization.

What’s the difference between a 4-piece and 6-piece fly rod?

The main difference is portability.

A 4-piece fly rod is considered the traditional standard. It breaks down small enough for most travel and storage needs while maintaining a seamless feel and performance many anglers are familiar with.

A 6-piece fly rod breaks down even shorter, making it significantly easier to pack into carry-ons, backpacks, duffels, or small vehicle compartments. This makes it ideal for anglers who travel frequently, hike into remote water, or simply want a rod that’s always easy to bring along.

In the past, multi-piece rods sometimes had a reputation for sacrificing performance. Modern blank technology has changed that. Today’s well-designed 6-piece rods can deliver performance comparable to traditional 4-piece rods — with the added advantage of extreme portability.

Choosing between the two comes down to how and where you fish:

  • If you primarily fish close to home and don’t need ultra-compact storage, a 4-piece is a great choice.
  • If you travel often or want maximum flexibility in how you pack and carry your gear, a 6-piece rod gives you that edge.

Both can perform at a high level — it’s simply about choosing the right tool for your lifestyle.

Are 6-piece rods less durable?

No — not when they’re designed and built properly.

Modern 6-piece rods use advanced carbon fiber materials and precision ferrule design to maintain strength and structural integrity across each section. When engineered correctly, the additional ferrules do not make the rod inherently weaker.

In fact, durability is influenced far more by blank design, material quality, and manufacturing standards than by the number of sections.

The reality is that most fly rod failures happen because of high-sticking, impacts, or improper handling — not because a rod has more pieces.

A well-built 6-piece rod should deliver the same reliability you expect from a traditional 4-piece rod — with the added benefit of superior packability.

As always, choosing quality materials and thoughtful design matters far more than simply counting sections.

What is direct-to-angler pricing and why does that matter?

Direct-to-angler pricing means we design, build, and sell our rods directly to you — without traditional retail distribution.

In a traditional retail model, products typically move from the manufacturer to a distributor, then to a retail store before reaching the customer. Each step adds margin to cover overhead, inventory costs, and operating expenses.

By selling directly to anglers, we eliminate those additional retail markups. That allows us to invest more into materials and design while keeping pricing significantly more efficient.

What this means for you:

  • Higher-quality components for the price
  • Transparent, straightforward pricing
  • Premium performance without retail markup

We fully respect the role fly shops play in the fishing community — especially for local expertise, guiding, and connection. Our approach simply gives anglers another option: high-performance gear delivered directly, without the added retail layers.

In the end, it’s about giving you more performance for your dollar — and the freedom to choose how you want to buy your gear.

How do I choose a size and weight that is best for me?

In fly fishing, there isn’t one perfect rod — there’s the right rod for the situation.

Different water types, fly sizes, weather conditions, and fish species all call for different tools. A small mountain creek demands something very different than a windy western river or a saltwater flat.

Here’s a simple way to think about it:

  • 3–4 Weight – Designed for small streams and technical trout fishing where lighter tippet and delicate presentations matter.
  • 5 Weight – The most versatile trout rod, capable of handling a wide range of flies and conditions.
  • 6 Weight – Adds power for wind, bigger water, streamers, and larger trout.
  • 7–8 Weight – Ideal for bass, pike, and light saltwater species.
  • 9 Weight and up – Built for heavier saltwater applications and powerful fish.

Rod length also plays a role:

  • Shorter rods excel in tight quarters.
  • 9’ rods offer all-around versatility.
  • Longer rods improve line control and mending on larger rivers.

Instead of asking, “What do I fish most?” consider asking, “What situations do I want to be prepared for?”

Many anglers eventually build a small lineup — each rod purpose-built for a different experience. When you match the rod to the conditions, casting feels easier, presentations improve, and the entire day on the water becomes more enjoyable.

Choose the right tool for the water in front of you — and the fishing gets better.
