What Size/Weight Do I Need?
Choosing the right fly rod weight and length depends on the species you're targeting, the size of flies you'll be casting, and the fishing conditions. Here's a guide to help you decide:
Quick Recommendations
First fly rod? Start with a 5-weight, 9'0 rod. It's the most versatile option.
Small mountain streams? Go lighter with a 3 or 4-weight, 7'6 - 8'6 rod.
Saltwater fishing? An 8-weight, 9'0 rod is your go-to for most flats species.
Big western rivers or throwing heavier rigs? A 6-weight, 9'0 rod adds power without losing versatility.
Chasing larger saltwater species or windy conditions? Step up to a 9-weight for extra lifting power.
Rod Weight Guide
